Quick Answer

The best time for street photography in Da Nang is 4:30–6:30 AM at My Khe beach for the basket boat fishing activity, and late afternoon into evening for Con Market and the Han River bridges. Use a wide 24–28mm lens for the beach, carry a UV filter for the coastal salt air, and bring a tripod for the bridge night shots.

01

Best Time to Shoot

Da Nang's most compelling photography happens at the extremes of the day. The fishing beach at dawn (4:30–6:30 AM) is the city's signature subject — basket boats launching and returning in the pre-sunrise light.

The second window is late afternoon into night (4:30–8:00 PM) when the markets are active, the river bridge lights up, and the coastal light goes golden before the neon takes over.

Timing Notes
  • My Khe fishing activity peaks 5:00–6:30 AM — boats return, nets sorted, catch sold on the sand
  • Con Market interior light is best 6:00–9:00 AM before it gets crowded
  • Han River bridge fire show: Saturday and Sunday nights only
  • Nam O village is a 20-minute drive — worth the early start

My Khe Beach — Dawn Fishing

The round basket boats (thuyền thúng) of My Khe beach are Da Nang's most distinctive image. Local fishermen launch between 4:00–5:00 AM and return between 6:00–7:30 AM. The return — boats dragged across wet sand, the catch sorted and sold, families helping unload — is unlike anything else in Central Vietnam.

Arrive by 5:00 AM to catch the boats coming in against the pre-dawn sky.

My Khe Beach North
5:00–7:00 AM · Basket boats, fishermen, wet sand, sunrise

Walk north from the main beach toward the fishing area — separate from the tourist beach. The northern stretch near My Khe village has the highest concentration of working boats. GPS: 16.0539° N, 108.2477° E

Pro Tips
  • Use a wide angle (24–28mm) to capture boats, beach, and people together
  • Shoot into the light just before sunrise for silhouettes on wet sand
  • The fish sale happens on the sand immediately after boats land — don't leave early
  • The return is more interesting than the launch — more people, more activity
03

Con Market

Da Nang's main indoor market is large, busy, and largely untouched by tourism. Produce, seafood, clothing, and hardware in a covered space with extraordinary shafts of light from above.

Arrive before 7:00 AM for the peak activity. The seafood section in the attached outdoor market on the eastern side is particularly strong.

Con Market
6:00–9:00 AM · Market interior, light shafts, vendors, seafood

The covered hall has high windows that create dramatic light columns in morning. Walk the perimeter first to find the active wholesale sections. GPS: 16.0687° N, 108.2237° E

04

Nam O Fishing Village

North of the city centre, Nam O is a traditional fishing community resisting the resort development pushing in from both sides. The beach in the early morning — boats anchored offshore, nets being repaired, smoke from fish being grilled — is the Da Nang that most visitors never see.

A 20-minute taxi from the city centre. Arrive by 6:00 AM for the morning activity.

Getting There
  • Grab or taxi — about 15,000–20,000 VND from city centre
  • The main fishing beach is west-facing — morning light comes from behind you (ideal)
  • Walk the village lanes — the back streets have drying fish, net repair, and domestic life
  • Be respectful — this is a working village, not a tourist attraction
05

Han River Bridges at Night

Da Nang has invested heavily in its riverfront. The Dragon Bridge breathes fire Saturday and Sunday nights; the Swing Bridge rotates for boat traffic; the promenade fills with locals in the evenings.

Position yourself on the east bank looking west for the best Dragon Bridge angle. Arrive before the fire show (usually 9:00 PM weekends) to set up.

Han River Promenade
7:00–10:00 PM · Bridge lights, river reflection, crowds

The best position for the Dragon Bridge is the east bank near Bach Dang Street. The bridge reflection in the water is strongest when the river is calm.

Night Settings
  • Use a tripod or brace against the railing for long exposures
  • ISO 800–1600 at f/5.6 captures bridge lights with some depth
  • The fire show lasts about 15 minutes — scout position in advance
  • The promenade is busiest 7:30–9:00 PM — excellent crowd energy
06

Camera Settings for Da Nang

The coastal environment demands care. Salt air and wind-blown sand are constant — keep lenses capped when not shooting, clean glass regularly, and use a UV filter on your primary lens.

For the beach: wide angle (24–28mm). For the market: 35–50mm. For the bridges at night: tripod essential.

Settings by Location
Beach / Market / Night bridges

Beach: 24–28mm, f/5.6, Auto ISO | Market: 35mm, f/2.8, ISO 1600–3200 | Night bridges: 24–50mm, f/5.6–f/8, ISO 400–800, tripod

07

Cultural Etiquette

Da Nang is a modern, outward-facing city — people are generally comfortable with cameras. The fishing communities (My Khe, Nam O) are more traditional. Approach fishermen with patience: show up, watch, let them get used to you before raising the camera.

At Nam O specifically, a respectful approach — asking before photographing in private spaces, buying something from a local vendor — goes further than any explanation.

Essential Phrases
  • Xin chào (sin chow) — Hello
  • Cảm ơn (gam un) — Thank you
  • Được không? (duoc kong) — Is it okay?
  • Ngư dân (ngu dan) — Fisherman
  • Đẹp quá (dep kwa) — Very beautiful
